Announcement of the Study Group on Letters and Communication in the Western Middle Ages
Everyone
We would like to inform you about the research meeting on "Letters and Communication in the Western Middle Ages" to be held at Ochanomizu University on Saturday, March 5th. On that day, we will welcome Atsushi Okazaki (Kyushu University), an expert in Western medieval document studies and historical source theory, to give a presentation. In addition, Kazuki Takahashi (Musashi University), an expert in letters and documents from the perspective of Japanese medieval history, will speak, and Hirokazu Tsurushima (Kumamoto University) will provide comments from the perspective of comparing letters and communication. We hope that the discussion will be deepened through active discussion from the floor. Please feel free to participate.
Yukio Arai
Date and Time : Saturday, March 5, 2016, 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM
Venue : Conference Room 1, 1st Floor, Building 1, Faculty of Letters and Education, Ochanomizu University
http://www.ocha.ac.jp/access/index.html
Presenter and Topic : Atsushi Okazaki (Kyushu University) "Various Issues Surrounding 'Correspondence' Sources in Medieval Western Europe"
This paper will discuss various issues surrounding "letter" sources in medieval Western Europe, primarily by organizing research trends and points of contention. In doing so, it will strive to provide a valid comparative perspective, both within Western Europe and between Japan and Western Europe. While specific materials will mainly be drawn from examples and research in continental Western Europe, the paper will aim for a broad, objective discussion.
Western "correspondence" sources can be broadly divided into literary and documentary sources, and these two have been treated differently in terms of academic circles, research groups, research interests, and methodologies. On the other hand, it is possible to extract common points of discussion from the perspective of the generation and transmission of the sources, as well as their manipulation in later generations. This point has become particularly clear with the growing tendency towards constructivism in historical source studies.

Important Notice
On the 18th and 19th of last month, Professor Lee and Professor Kim from KSBH came to Kumamoto to discuss the continued publication of the East Asian Journal of British History, Vol. 4 and beyond, and changes to the Korean parent organization (the establishment of an independent Korean organization separate from KSBH, with the majority of KSBH members effectively joining the East Asian Society of British History).
From our side, Japan, there are almost no changes, but the Korean side seems to want to make it a separate organization from KSBH, and they asked for our understanding on this point. So, Mr. Tsurushima, the chairman of the Japanese side, and I listened carefully to their explanations and confirmed the following provisional agreement. Please refer to the English version for details. Please excuse the mix of polite and informal language.
Going forward, the East Asian British History Society will be consolidated into a single academic society. However, for administrative purposes, a secretary-general will be appointed in both South Korea and Japan. Mr. Shigeru Akita will continue to serve as the secretary-general on the Japanese side.
To stabilize the new system, the joint chairmanship of Lee and Hak-do will be extended for another four-year term.
The budget will be unified. However, due to exchange rate considerations, membership fees will be collected independently in each country. Mr. Nakamura will be asked to be the treasurer (accountant).
While we aim to expand throughout East Asia in the future, for the time being, we will focus on acquiring members in Taiwan, Hong Kong, China, and Singapore. Regarding future directions, in order to expand the academic society within Japan, we would like to develop internal regulations tailored to domestic needs, such as ensuring transparency in decision-making.
Membership fees will be calculated in US dollars. In Japanese yen, the fees will be 3,000 yen for general members and 1,000 yen for student members.
The international conference will also be renamed the East Asian British History Conference. Japan will host the next international conference, and we are considering the date and location. The South Korean side has requested that it be held in the fall of 2016 (October or November) in Kyoto. We have also set a goal of trying to invite at least two researchers from other Asian countries (Hong Kong, Singapore, and preferably mainland China).
To make this 2016 conference a reality, we need to secure our own funding. This will be a matter for consideration on the Japanese side, including securing research grants. Although it is two years away, we need to start efforts to secure funding sources. Please let us know your thoughts, including whether to apply to private foundations.

Call for Presenters for the 5th Korea-Japan-Britain History Conference
As we enter December, I hope you are all in good health.
Thanks to everyone's cooperation, the 5th "Korea-Japan-Britain History Conference," which has been held four times so far, will be held at Cheongju University in South Korea in the latter half of June next year, as detailed below (this conference is held every three years, alternating between Japan and South Korea, through cooperation between the two countries).
The common theme for the next conference is "Multiculturalism and Race in 20th Century Britain." While the focus will be on 20th-century British history, the Korean organizers intend to interpret the theme broadly and discuss the issue across a wide timeframe (time span) from the early modern period to the present day. We also intend to interpret the theme flexibly.
Therefore, although it is rather urgent, we would like to "openly solicit" research presenters from as wide a range of fields as possible from the Japanese side for the conference. If you are interested, please apply by December 25th (Tuesday) according to the following guidelines.

Announcement of establishment
Declaration of Establishment of The East Asian Society of British History
The Japan-Korea Conference on British History, which was first held in Seoul, South Korea in December 2005, was followed by conferences in Osaka in November 2006, Gwangju in 2008, and reached a milestone with its fourth conference in Kumamoto in 2010. At that conference, the issue of establishing an international academic society centered on Korea and Japan was raised, and in February 2011, a meeting was held in Busan by volunteers from both sides (please refer to the Kanade Bunko Historical Research Institute's website and blog for details), and finally, on February 15, the establishment of the "East-Asian Society of British History" was declared.
At the same time, with the cooperation of the Institute of Historical Research, University of London, a peer-reviewed English academic journal titled "A History of East Asia and Britain" was published on March 31st.
We hope to use this opportunity to examine the age-old yet ever-relevant question of why we study British history from a more global perspective, and to make East Asia a hub for academic information dissemination. We would greatly appreciate your active participation and cooperation.
It shall hereby be duly and solemnly declared that The East Asian Society of British History has been established.
